A born-and-raised Austinite, Nate discovered the world of great beer in the mid-90s after a spiritual experience involving a sunrise, Pedernales Falls, and a bottle of Guinness Extra Stout. After several years of homebrewing obsessively, he made the plunge and joined on with the newly founded (512) Brewing Company, spending over 6 years as their original head brewer and creating many of (512)’s most popular recipes. In the Summer of 2014, the desire to try something new led him to Portland, OR and the expanding Mt Tabor Brewery. Mt Tabor’s practice of keeping a dozen or more house beers on at all times, as well as proximity to new and experimental ingredients, and encouragement to play, made for an ideal woodshedding experience.
After a year and a half in the Pacific Northwest, the urge to return home to Austin and the vibrant Central Texas brewing community became overwhelming. Back home in Texas, Nate aims to combine the consistency, approachability, and sense of beer as community glue that he learned in his first several years brewing in Texas with the experimentation and variety he developed in the PNW.
